NLP - or Neuro-Linguistic Programming, is essentially a set of tools, principles and models for achieving personal excellence. (And this is how it is used by most people who have come across it, learnt it and practiced it.) It was originally the brainchild of two men - Richard Bandler and John Grinder, from the U.S. Since then, it has grown and evolved and had many other people involved in its development to date. A lot of the original work consisted of understanding just how particularly skilled or successful people achieved what they did. What was going on inside their heads? What did they say to themselves? What did they feel? Along the way the “Presuppositons”, or fundamental principles of NLP were created. Two of these are: The map is not the territory – Our senses take in information from the world around us - and we then decide what meaning that information has. Life and Mind are one systemic process – Our mind and our body are part of the same system. Anything happening in the mind, happens in the body and vice versa. Today, there are lots of good websites with general information about NLP and also books which give you a reasonable grounding in what NLP is all about, however it is definitely a “hands-on” experiential thing! All the principles and techniques have been used to great success in the business world and also therapeutically. A lot of NLP’s ideas and techniques have been highly influential in forming the basis to most modern Life Coaching systems. Some of the main benefits to learning about NLP and practicing it are: • Rapport – building & Communication skills • Questioning skills • Accelerated Learning skills • Analytical Models • Language-Pattern models • Change Management models Its main Life Coaching / therapeutic tools are: • Anchoring (positive feelings / states) • The Visual Squash • 6- Step Reframe • Fast Phobia Cure • New Behaviour Generator • Personal History Changer • Logical Levels • Well-Formed Outcomes • SWISH patterns • Time Line Therapy • Hypnotherapy techniques
There are plenty of training providers these days - offering NLP Practitioner, Master Practitioner and NLP Trainer Diplomas. The main Professional body of the NLP world is INLPTA – The International NLP Trainers Association, although there are others that have appeared over the years. INLPTA like other professional bodies function to provide NLP Practitioners and Trainers with quality training of a prescribed standard, internationally recognised qualifications, Codes of Ethics and continued Personal Development. The usual required study to obtain a recognised NLP Practitioners Diploma is around 140 hours.
